Facade design
A facade is an object, building material or covering that provides a simplified but yet amazing and aesthetical interface to a building or structure. Facade design is the trending architectural practice today as materials such as concrete, ceramic, glass, aluminum etc are used to further beautify an architectural design to reflect and invoke certain expressions and information to the world. A building’s facade is its way it presents itself to the world. Designing the facade of a building is like choosing a suitable outfit to attend a ball or party. This means there’s a possible number of options to explore.Without wasting much time, let us look at the various types of facade designs used today
- Concrete facade
- Glass facade
- Media facade
- Aluminum facade
- Copper facade
- Zinc facade
- Ceramic facade
- Mosaic facade
- Perforated facade
- HPL facade
CONCRETE FACADE
These are precast concrete cladding used to decorate the mostly the exterior of a building.
CERAMIC FACADE
These are hard, weather proof tiles that are suitable for all conventional facade systems. It lets you design without stress and difficulty as it improves functionality and design. Some advantages of using ceramic cladding include
- High quality appearance
- Very durable
- Frost resistant
- Non-flammable
- Scratch-resistance
- UV-resistant
- Easy maintenance
- Graffiti resistance
- Light weight
- System and design flexibility
GLASS FACADE
Glass facade is no doubt, the commonly used cladding as it lets daylight and solar radiation in and keeps wind and rain out. Although, it has some disadvantages such as uncontrollable heat loss and gain but it doesn't limit it's usage as 'smart glass' have been invented to tackle this problem. Glass cladding are undoubtedly the most commonly used and they can be attractive but take into consideration the radiation and temperature gradient of the space it defines.
MEDIA FACADE
For those of you who are movie addicts, you may like this one as it is a medium through which ALIENS announce their invasion of Earth. Funny hmmmm, just joking. Alright, media facade are a form of art in architecture. It is usually associated with large screens and illuminated advertising on significant buildings. Maybe if you've been to Las Vegas or Hong Kong, then you may have a hang of what I am saying. This is an informative facade or feature used to portray or serve as a point of communication and advertising to the world at large. It is a medium employed by the architect to disseminate information. This practice is called MEDIATECTURE.
ALUMINUM FACADE
Aluminums great strength, lightweight, ductility, corrosion resistance, flexibility, 100% recyclable, unlimited design possibilities and sustainable qualities have made it a vital building material in the construction industry as it can be used for both exterior elements (walls, roofs, facades) and interior elements (ceiling tiles, screen walls, modular rain screen facades etc).
COPPER FACADE
Copper cladding is very durable also and lightweight when compared to other materials and metals. It is also 100% recyclable. It is cost-effective and maintenance free.
ZINC FACADE
In addition to its distinct design, color and Outlook, Zinc claddings also are flexible to use, lightweight and durable. Without doubt, they can be used for both interior design and exterior decorations (roofs, claddings).
MOSAIC FACADE
Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone or other materials. (Wikipedia 2016). It is used for both interior design and exterior decorations. They have great waterproofing ability and have high strength. Not much can be said or boasted about their UV-resistance but it is flexible to use and frost resistant.
PERFORATED FACADE
Perforated claddings are mostly constructed from aluminum but can also be constructed from galvanized steel, cold rolled steel, stainless steel, Copper, or weathered steel. They are often used for interior and exterior aesthetics, sun-shading, wind-blocking, energy saving, privacy and most importantly, noise reduction. They can be applied to medical centers, transport facilities, education facilities, gyms and spa's, parking garages, residential homes and commercial buildings.
HPL FACADE
HPL facade or better still, high-pressure laminates are produced from natural fibers soaked in synthetic resin under high pressure and temperature in laminate presses and hence the name. They are used as cladding materials for ventilated facades because of its top quality and durability. They are also flexible to use and have unique surfaces.
